I am pretty confident the stone in the middle of the love knot is an opal. It is gold tone but I doubt it is gold. It may be gold-filled. I just can’t say. There are no marks on the pin, neither a maker mark nor a gold mark. I am pretty confident the stone in the middle of the love knot is an opal. It is iridescent and displays a fair amount of color. I’m sorry, but I am unable to get a good photo. I have tried a variety of backgrounds and lighting but the photos just show the opal as white and opaque. Under a magnifier, the opal is quite colorful. The prongs that hold the opal appear to need tightening. The stone is small; maybe about 6 to 6.5 mm. This comes from a collection of pins that date from the late 1800s to the early 1900s The stick pin comes from a US estate of a Scottish family and the piece does seem to have some Gaelic or Celtic influence.
