Description This is an original 1926 Imperial Japanese Navy recruit graduation album (Taisho 15), created for a sailor who completed basic training as a Fourth-Class Seaman. A highly valuable primary-source document that shows how new recruits of the Imperial Japanese Navy were trained before being assigned to their ships. ■ What was the “Kaheidan” (Naval Corps)? The Kaheidan was the Navy’s official training corps— essentially the boot camp of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Every new recruit entered the Kaheidan first, where they received intensive basic training: marching & drill rifle & bayonet practice small arms training seamanship & boat handling swimming & water exercises communication, discipline, and daily routines Performance and aptitude at the Kaheidan determined the recruit’s future assignment to ships or specialized units. ■ Yokosuka Naval Corps & Maizuru Training Unit Yokosuka was one of the Navy’s most important bases, and its Naval Corps produced a large portion of the Navy’s enlisted sailors. After basic training, many recruits—including the owner of this album—continued practical instruction at the Maizuru Naval Training Unit, where they learned: gunnery boat operations landing drills formation training shipboard skills discipline and teamwork This dual structure (Yokosuka → Maizuru) was considered one of the Navy’s most intensive and effective training routes. ■ Album Features 162 pages (very large volume) Numerous photos of drills, shooting practice, boat operations, formations, buildings, barracks, and daily life Complete name lists from the 19th to 27th platoons (including NCO names) Photos and text related to the training ship “Azuma” (吾妻) Embossed cover with Rising Sun and anchor motif Handwritten owner’s name: Navy 3rd Class Seaman Tanidabe Toshio ■ Historical Value Albums from the Taisho period are far rarer than those from the WWII era. This piece documents the Navy before the major expansions of the 1930s, providing an authentic view of training culture, discipline, and early Showa-era naval organization. A perfect item for: military historians naval researchers collectors of Imperial Japanese artifacts museums and academics A genuine opportunity to “own a piece of history” from Japan’s pre-war naval development.
