This is a Vintage Okinawa Earthenware Shisa is an estate sale find that showcases the unique cultural heritage of Okinawa. Look carefully and you will see that it is distinct from the Komainu Lion-Dogs found on mainland Japan. Unlike the typically dour Komainu, Shisa are often more expressive and playful, embodying the distinct Okinawan blend of Chinese and Ryukyuan influences. Dip-glazed to a high gloss finish, you can see the dip line around the bottom of the piece (SEE last photo in the listing). Solid, sturdy, and protective, this Shisa from Okinawa was probably made in the 1970's.
