It uses Intelligent Mail barcodes (IMb) designed for automated, rather than human, scans at regional sorting hubs, leading to infrequent or missing scans.  Key Aspects of ESE Scanning: No Acceptance Scans: USPS staff cannot, and are not required to, scan ESE envelopes at the counter.
