Hinges properly, lid opens and closes with authority. Behold a pint-sized piece of mid-century Japanese export craft that somehow makes a railroad locomotive look romantic. This hinged heart-shaped trinket box — stamped JAPAN on the base — features a silver-tone cast metal body with open diamond filigree on the lid, deep red velvet lining inside, three small decorative feet, and ornate scrollwork pressed into the sides. Sitting front and center on the lid: a raised relief locomotive motif. A train. On a heart box. Japan in the 1960s did not take requests. About these pieces: “Stamped JAPAN” (without the word “Made”) indicates pre-1971 production, consistent with the postwar Japanese export era when craftsmen were churning out well-made decorative metalware for the American market.
