Product Description: This iconic dual-hemisphere world map was created by leading British cartographer Herman Moll, first printed in London 1719, a defining geographical print of the early Georgian era. Using a symmetrical split Eastern/Western circular hemisphere projection, it synthesizes all major European maritime discoveries before Captain Cook’s voyages. It fully delineates the Americas, Strait of Magellan, Australia (labelled “New Holland”) and Africa, with a complete latitude-longitude graticule marking the equator and tropics. Four inset polar hemispheres fill the four corners, while three smaller diagrams at the bottom illustrate climate zones, day/night hemispheres and an armillary celestial sphere, combining terrestrial geography with basic astronomy. The ornate top cartouche is framed by two sets of allegorical classical figures: personifications of Europe & the Americas on the left, Africa & Asia on the right, flanked by putti, fruit garlands and scrollwork — characteristic elaborate decorative cartography of Queen Anne / George I period Britain. Dedicated to the Prince of Wales, the map circulated widely among nobility, schools and merchant mariners.
