Product Description: Hand-coloured copper engraved double hemisphere world map, engraved and published in Amsterdam by Hendrik Hondius in 1630, part of the expanded Mercator-Hondius world atlas series. Titled Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica ac Hydrographica Tabula , this plate combines terrestrial geography and oceanic navigation data collected from major Age of Discovery circumnavigators including Magellan and Francis Drake. Cartographic hallmarks include California depicted as an island and the large hypothetical southern continent "Terra Australis Incognita" across the southern ocean. Rich Baroque allegorical ornamentation frames the composition: four classical element figures (Fire, Air, Water, Earth) at the top, portraits of four ancient geographers at each corner, and an allegorical female figure representing the Americas at the bottom centre. It is one of the most celebrated decorative world maps of early 17th-century Dutch cartography.
