The volume presents the full scope of Oribe ware in full-color photographs, including inscribed tea bowls, shoe-shaped tea bowls, handled bowls, covered vessels, mukozuke dishes, ewers, incense burners, candlesticks, ceramic inkstones, water jars, flower vases, tea caddies, incense containers, and other tea utensils. Other notes are also included. === Excerpt from the Overview === Overview: Vessels of the Momoyama Townspeople - Junichi Takeuchi  Introduction  Green glaze is boldly poured over the edges of the vessels. Designs of plovers and partial cartwheels are painted with practiced brushwork. Geometric patterns are applied to dishes and bowls, and sometimes even to tea bowls. The vessel forms display remarkable freedom and variety. In addition to circular and quadrilateral forms, there are fan-shaped mukozuke dishes, incense containers and incense burners modeled in the shapes of birds, boat-shaped dishes, dishes with petal-shaped rims, and even shoe-shaped tea bowls distorted into oval forms in rejection of the circle. When we hear the words "Oribe ware," such images come to mind. Oribe ware established a brightness and uninhibited character unprecedented in the history of Japanese ceramics, while its skillful designs fully expressed a modern sense of form. For ceramics made during the Momoyama period, more than three hundred years ago, they possess a brilliance that remains remarkably immediate. Unlike other ceramics, Oribe ware has a powerful ability to bridge the long distance of history. Despite this sense of familiarity, however, surprisingly little has been clearly established concerning what Oribe ware was, how it originated and developed, and the complete character of a ceramic tradition that was eventually destined to disappear. This essay considers these questions in light of previous scholarship. To that end, several tentative arguments and hypotheses will also be presented without avoiding them merely because the supporting evidence may be insufficient. It is hoped that this inquiry will clarify, even in some measure, the position of Oribe ware in the history of ceramics and the meaning of its beauty as a craft.   What Is Oribe Ware? Where did the name "Oribe ware" originate? It was, of course, named after Furuta Oribe, the military commander renowned as a tea master. Since most Japanese ceramics are named after their places of production, this name derived from a person may be regarded as unusual. He later served as Chief Curator of the Gotoh Museum, Director of the University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts, and Director of the Eisei Bunko Museum. The slipcase has general age-related wear such as discoloration, light stains, and rubbing from normal storage (some of which may not be fully visible in the photos). The hardcover book with dust jacket shows typical aging-discoloration and minor foxing around the spine and edges-with a used but well-preserved appearance overall. There is age-toned spotting on the top edge, fore edge, and margins of the text pages, but the color plates remain bright and clean. No noticeable writing or underlining.
