Detailed explanations are provided for all works, and the volume is also rich in analytical texts. Beginning with the National Treasure Shino tea bowl "Unohanagaki," this volume presents inscribed Shino tea bowls, Nezumi-Shino tea bowls, incense containers, incense burners, water jars, bowls, framed dishes, small cups, sake cups, mukozuke dishes, and other works, showing the full range of Shino ware. It includes carefully selected masterpieces and outstanding works of the highest level in Japan. The works are arranged to include every type of vessel form and to show the development of the style. In addition to the photographs, dimensions and commentary are provided for every work at the end of the volume. English titles are provided for all works. An analytical essay in English is also included at the end of the volume. From masterpieces in museum collections to numerous outstanding works from private collections that can rarely be seen, the works are presented in color photographs with commentary. Other notes are also included. === Excerpt from the Overview === Overview: The Vitality of Momoyama Ceramics - Seizo Hayashiya Introduction There is a celebrated Shino tea bowl named "Unohanagaki." During the Momoyama period, when the Japanese created the refined world of chanoyu through the distinctive aesthetic sense of wabi and sabi and enjoyed life, many vessels embodying the idea that "use itself is beauty" were fired at kilns throughout the country, and distinctive styles found in no other country came into flower. Among such Momoyama ceramics, "Unohanagaki" is particularly outstanding in its workmanship, and it has therefore been designated a National Treasure as a work representing Japanese ceramics. To my great delight, I have had the experience of drinking a bowl of tea from this celebrated vessel. I have held it dozens of times and believe that I know every detail of the way the tea bowl was made, but one cannot truly experience a tea bowl as a tea bowl without drinking tea from it. I drank tea from it only once, but I still remember that occasion vividly. It was in early spring, at the Tengo-an tea room in the garden of the Tokyo National Museum. The tea was prepared by the late Takahiro Mitsui, and it was a gathering of one host and one guest. As one would expect of the owner, Mr. Mitsui prepared a bowl of tea with great ease and composure. The deep green tea sat deep in the white-glazed tea bowl, and when I held it in my hands, it was gently warm. The clay surface, moist and damp, was not dry as it appeared when merely looked at. It made me feel vividly that it was alive as a tea bowl. Whenever I hold this tea bowl, I always feel that although it is small, it is somewhat heavy in the hands. However, this is, (Omitted) Many of them are fired red, and one notices that this produces the soft texture distinctive to Shino ware. The slipcase has general age-related wear such as discoloration, light stains, and rubbing from normal storage (some of which may not be fully visible in the photos). The hardcover book with dust jacket shows typical aging-discoloration and minor foxing around the spine and edges-with a used but well-preserved appearance overall. There is age-toned spotting on the top edge, fore edge, and margins of the text pages, but the color plates remain bright and clean. No noticeable writing or underlining.
