Tom Trubshaw is an abstract artist working primarily with reclaimed wood, acrylic and aerosol enamel paint, cement, and steel bases. His practice favors a deliberately primitive approach, avoiding extensive woodworking tools in favor of methods more closely aligned with early abstract artists of the early 20th century. Beginning in 2012, Tom developed his first sculptural “towers,” constructed from salvaged materials, including a dismantled vintage dresser found at a recycling center. These early works were created independently of art-historical references, driven instead by a desire to explore abstract form using limited materials and experience. Tom’s work is guided by evolving principles of contrast, depth, and spatial relationships - rules developed through practice and often intentionally disrupted through experimentation.
