A charming little antique Japanese brass box from the Meiji period (1868-1912), worked in crisp relief with the naturalistic motifs the era is loved for - and unusually generous in its decoration, with FOUR shaped floral reserves around the sides plus a fifth scene on the lid. The domed lid carries a bound sheaf of blossoms, while the four side panels each frame a seasonal spray - a flowering prunus (plum) branch, a chrysanthemum with a perched insect, a second blossoming branch, and a lily - together forming the four-seasons floral cycle beloved in Japanese design. The hinged lid opens smoothly to a plain interior, and at roughly 1.5 inches across it nestles perfectly in the palm. Traditionally these diminutive boxes held snuff or pills; today it makes an equally delightful home for stamps, rings, or small treasures - or simply a decorative object with real character.
