Oversized Mercury Glass Handblown Ornament from Department 56 -- Vintage, Retired, & RARE -- Speed Skater Hans Brinker Plus Bonus -- vintage hand-crocheted ice skates ornament! Like "Hans Brinker" from Hans Christian Andersen, this young speed skater appears to be in motion across the ice. And Wow at the unusual glitter on this ornament -- iridescent and long -- creating a fuzzy effect on the sweater & cap, as well as a cloud of icy "mist" behind him! (See photos!) This 6-1/4" creation bears the Dept. 56 round metal hang tag on the ornament cap and is believed to be from the Oversized Mercury Glass series from the 1990s, though the paper tag & box are missing. It is definitely hand blown, evidenced by a pontil mark on the bottom, and it is hand painted in fine detail, including reddish windburn on the boy's face and "cold" nose. This would make a fantastic gift for anyone in your life who loves skating! An estate-sale find, the ornament is pristine.
