For the most part this has been a lost art. The decorations were primarily transfer decorated, where the designs were printed on a silk screened decal that was put on the blank porcelain stein body then touched up and hand painted and then fired.  These highly prized and rare lithopane beer steins were created for specific German regiments and for those who served to protect Germany in the late 1800's to early 1900's. They were a symbol of patriotic loyalty to the fatherland or to the regiment from one of the lands in the German empire.The decorations generally depicted on these steins were typical training scenes, portraits or on rare occassions,combat  scenes.The glazes included a great variety of color and brilliance. For the most part this has been a lost art. The pewter work on most regimental steins was very elaborate and meaningful.The lids,finials,thumb lifts reflected the subject portrayed on the stein.The lithopane scene is of a happy couple dancing.     The stein for sale has German writings to accompany the wonderful decorations which include the names of those serving. I looked up some of the German writings on the stein then looked on the internet for translation from German to English. The writing around the top rim of the stein translate to:  "1 st Bavarian Cavalry Regiment Prince Carl of Bavaria 3 established 1896-'99 ".  " Attention present arms a reservist is coming with his sweeetheart" , " Victory or Death", " without a bugle without edge always rock solid",  The stein stands approx. 10 1/2" tall to the top of the horses head. It measures approx. 5 1/2" wide from the front of the base to the end of the pewter handle and measures approx. 4 5/8" at the base. It is marked on the underside with a crown mark a backwards KR and Germany. I have taken many photos for your viewing to help with the description. I would say this item is in excellent antique condition with normal age wear and no cracks. The pewter top is finely detailed with a helmeted rider and horse topping off this wonderful piece of military history.
