Kara (唐) is actually the character for the Tang dynasty (618-907) of China, considered by many as the golden age of Chinese culture and power. Up for your consideration this Vintage Arita Ware Karako Design Sometsuke Porcelain Footed Rice Bowl in excellent condition. No chips, nicks nor cracks noted. Standard Japanese rice bowls typically measure from 4-¼" to 5" in diameter and from 2" to 2-¾" in height, designed to hold individual serving of rice and to fit comfortably in one hand. This one measures 4-⅝" in diameter and 2" high. Bowl hand marked Arita Ware Kayama Nabeshima (香山鍋島) underside, which likely refers to a specific kiln, brand, or style (Kazan/Kayama) that produces or recreates these traditional, high-end, hand-painted porcelain patterns.  Nabeshima ware (鍋島焼, Nabeshima-yaki) is an exceptionally high-quality Japanese porcelain produced in the Ōkawachi kilns in Saga Prefecture (formerly Hizen Province) during the Edo period (17th–19th centuries). Originally, this porcelain was not for sale to the public but was produced specifically as gifts for the Shogunate and other daimyō by the Saga Domain. It is known for delicate, under-glaze blue outlines. Bowl featuring the traditional Karako (唐子 - Chinese children) pattern, which depicts children playing among pine tree, with butterflies and peonies around. Kara (唐) is actually the character for the Tang dynasty (618-907) of China, considered by many as the golden age of Chinese culture and power.  The little children design on pottery symbolizes health for sons & daughters and longevity/continuity. The number of children on the design also have significance.  You will probably see three, five or seven children (always odd, never even number). The more children on the pottery, the higher is its grade. This rice bowl has 5 children. The style is known as sometsuke, which is blue and white porcelain using under-glaze cobalt blue. I  found no significant condition issues with the item, but signs of previous use and ownership should be expected consistent with its vintage timeline and should be taken into consideration with age and ownership.
