He is beautifully captured in mid-1860s style, sporting a full, neatly trimmed chin beard, a mustache, and side-parted hair. He is sharply dressed in a dark wool frock suit jacket with wide lapels, a matching button-down waistcoat vest, a crisp white collar, and a dark cravat bow tie, posed sitting in a plush upholstered velvet studio chair beside a draped pattern curtain backdrop. The reverse features a clean typographic backstamp for Keely, operating at the northwest corner of Fifth and Coates Streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Robert N. Keely was a prominent local documentarian active in the city during the 1860s, famously capturing portraits of local citizens, regional families, and Civil War figures. This clean regional studio marking combined with the subject's classic wartime garment and grooming styles provides a very nice representative specimen for collectors. About Cartes de Visite (CDVs): Popularized in the late 1850s and remaining popular through the 1870s, the carte de visite was a small, albumen print photograph mounted on a sturdy card stock backing. They were widely traded among friends and family, collected in Victorian photo albums, and represent the first true mass-production boom in photographic history.
