Narrow bar pins featuring a central gemstone flanked by symmetrical accent stones or interlocking metalwork became highly popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They were traditionally worn to secure high lace collars. The openwork "love knot" or repeating circular interlocking wire design is characteristic of late 19th-century aesthetics, moving into the cleaner geometric symmetries seen in early Art Deco transition pieces. The brooch features a central oval cabochon cut stone (resembling a ruby, pink tourmaline, or star sapphire) secured by distinct claw prongs, complemented by split seed pearls nested inside the circular gold links. The combination of rubies/pink stones with pearls was an iconic color palette of the Victorian and Edwardian periods. This is a very tiny brooch at only an inch long.
