For sale is a 20th-century woodblock recut of Hokusai’s most famous design, Kanagawa oki nami ura [Under the Wave off Kanagawa] from Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. IMPORTANT: This is NOT an Edo-period 1830s original. This is a hand-pulled woodblock printed from recarved blocks, produced in Japan during the Taishō/Shōwa period, circa 1920s–1960s. Likely Takamizawa or Adachi publisher. DETAILS • Design: Original by Hokusai, c. 1830–1832 • Printing: Hand-pulled woodblock on washi paper using traditional methods • Image Size: 9.75 x 14.25 in. [24.8 x 36.2 cm] • Sheet Size: 10.25 x 15 in. [26.0 x 38.1 cm] • Signature: Hokusai aratame Iitsu hitsu in plate, left of title cartouche • Title Cartouche: Fugaku sanjūrokkei / Kanagawa oki nami ura top right • Printing Evidence: Visible baren swirl texture in the blue sky area and woodgrain in the white foam. See photos 4–5. This confirms hand-pulled woodblock, not lithograph or inkjet CONDITION Excellent. Strong color retention with vibrant Prussian blue. Minor handling creases to corners, typical of unframed prints. No tears, no stains, no backing. Center shows a light storage crease visible in raking light. Please see all photos for condition. AUTHENTICITY This is an authentic Japanese woodblock recut. The baren pressure marks, woodgrain texture in the wave, and registration are all visible and consistent with traditional hand printing. These recuts were made for collectors and the tourist market using the same hand-carved block process as Edo-period prints. ABOUT THE IMAGE The Great Wave is arguably the most recognized artwork in the world. It depicts three oshiokuri-bune boats facing a giant wave with Mount Fuji in the distance.
