The tintype remains housed in an attractive embossed paper mount featuring an arched opening surrounded by a repeatingstar motif. This is a wonderful example of the collectible “hidden mother” or concealed-caregiver portrait tradition: an adult can clearly be seen immediately behind the child, positioned to support and steady the young sitter while remaining largely outside the intended portrait. The child wears an especially decorative outfit with contrasting bands, piping and multiple layers of scalloped/ruffled trim. Behind the sitter, portions of the caregiver’s clothing and body remain visible, giving the photograph the distinctive slightly uncanny quality for which hidden-mother photographs are collected. The tintype remains housed in an attractive embossed paper mount featuring an arched opening surrounded by a repeating star motif . That surviving decorative presentation adds considerably to the period character of the piece.
