Here is a Vintage pair of Japanese saltwater Akoya pearl Screw-back earrings in sterling silver. The pearls measure 9mm in diameter, making them very large for Akoyas. The pearls have a white color, with a slight cream tint and are excellently matched in color and luster. One is about 8.8mm wide and the other 9.0mm (a discrepancy that is very subtle and not noticed when worn). They have a fairly symmetrical form, a hallmark of quality Japanese Akoya pearls, and a satin-like luster. There are some growth characteristics that are noticeable upon close inspection and not noticeable at all when worn. The earrings weighs 3.6 grams and are each clearly marked with an “S”, which was used in Asia in the early/mid 20th century to denote sterling silver on small items.
