Antique 19th Century Straw Marquetry Box Geometric Starburst Design • Folk Art • Approx. 7 Inches Wonderful antique decorative box featuring an elaborate geometric straw-marquetry starburst design , measuring approximately 7 inches long . The hinged rectangular wooden box is decorated across the lid with a bold multi-point star or sunburst pattern assembled from numerous extremely fine strips of contrasting material. The directional arrangement of the individual strands creates the distinctive striped and almost shimmering appearance associated with traditional straw marquetry . Additional geometric straw-work decoration appears around the base and sides, including small diamond-shaped motifs. Traditional Straw Marquetry Straw marquetry is a painstaking decorative technique in which individual pieces of straw are split, flattened, often dyed, and carefully applied to a supporting surface to form intricate decorative patterns. By changing the direction of the individual strands, craftsmen were able to produce dramatic variations in light, color and texture. This technique was used on European decorative boxes and other small objects during the 18th and 19th centuries. The craftsmanship of this example is particularly apparent in the close-up photographs, where the numerous individual parallel strands forming the geometric design can clearly be seen. There is damage/separation to one corner , which has been photographed closely and is clearly visible in the listing photographs. Additional surface wear, scratches, small losses, edge wear and age-related imperfections are present. Despite the corner damage, the primary decorative surface remains substantially intact and the large geometric starburst continues to display very attractively. The interior shows expected signs of age and use. No restoration has been performed by us. Please examine all photographs carefully for exact condition.
