DESCRIPTION Beautiful vintage hand-carved wooden Nativity set, believed to be German and acquired from a Rhode Island estate. The figures are individually carved from solid wood with a warm natural/stained finish and restrained hand-painted facial and decorative details. The carving shows visible hand-tool work and attractive variations from figure to figure. Particularly striking is the tall Balthazar/Three Kings figure, approximately 8¼ inches high, with carved turban, geometric cape clasp and detailed gift chest. Joseph measures approximately 5½ inches (14 cm). The set also includes the Holy Family, Three Kings, shepherds, angel, animals and Baby Jesus with manger. Most figures have neatly fitted red felt on the underside of their bases. The large angel is carved primarily for frontal display and has a hanging/attachment point on the back. I have not found a maker’s mark and therefore am not attributing the set to a particular German or Oberammergau workshop . It is being offered as a vintage hand-carved wooden Nativity based on its construction and estate provenance. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they are part of the description.
