Though he was not a potter himself, he served as an artistic director or designer who guided the creation of this revolutionary ceramics style. Up for consideration this one of a kind Oribe Style Handmade Studio Pottery Piece - Teapot by Steph Chan in very good condition. No chips, nicks, cracks or other issues found. It measures approximately 3-½" in height, 5" in diameter and 9" from handle to spout. Teapot incised underside with designers name Steph Chan and date 5-98. Oribe ware, also known as 織部焼 (Oribe-yaki), is a style of Japanese pottery that first appeared in the sixteenth century throughout the late Momoyama (1573–1615) and early Edo periods (1615–1868). It is a type of Japanese stoneware recognized by its freely-applied glaze as well as its dramatic visual departure from the more somber, monochrome shapes and vessels common in Raku ware of the time. Oribe style is named after the late-16th-century Japanese tea master and warrior Furuta Oribe (1544–1615). Though he was not a potter himself, he served as an artistic director or designer who guided the creation of this revolutionary ceramics style. His distinct aesthetic broke away from strict traditional symmetry and restraint, favoring bold, asymmetrical shapes, eccentric forms, and iconic copper-green or jet-black glazes. I  found no significant condition issues with the item, but signs of previous use and ownership should be expected consistent with its vintage timeline and should be taken into consideration with age and ownership.
