Take a look at the critten at his feet, no, not the turtle. This animal was missing its ears (there seem to be holes) so I added toothpick ears. I know, not the greatest look. This is sold AS IS. Features the traditional Franciscan rope belt with three symbolic knots, representing the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience — this is a detail Ortega faithfully included in his santos. St. Francis of Assisi Hand Carved w/Birds, Turtle, Critters 8" Folk Art Taos This beautiful hand‑carved wood figure of St. Francis of Assisi could be made by New Mexico folk artist Ben Ortega or Joseph Archuleta. Then again, I could be wrong on both of those artists. This vintage carving stands approximately 8" tall to the top of the little bird. The base is about 6" x 5". The figure is mounted on a traditional square wooden base , a style more commonly seen in earlier folk art work and prized for its rustic authenticity. Features the traditional Franciscan rope belt with three symbolic knots, representing the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience — this is a detail Ortega faithfully included in his santos. This sculpture has an  expressive face, warm character, and traditional Northern New Mexico santo style. Take a look at the critten at his feet, no, not the turtle. Notice the beautiful colors in the wood. Another thought is that the artist could have the initials TR - the T in the cross and the R in the circle. St. Francis needs a better cleaning.
