The lid on the basket is held in place on one side of the basket by a wicker loop that extends from the lid around the handle.   The lid can easily be lifted up or completely rotated for full access to the interior of the basket.  The other side of the lid (near the opposite side of the handle) has an additional wicker loop that can be used with a ribbon or scarf to completely secure the handle.
