The image is a representation of the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus, a common theme in Christian art.   Metal frames, particularly those made of silver or pewter, were often used to protect and enhance the beauty of these images. The crown-like ornament at the top of the frame suggests a connection to royalty and the divine status of Mary as the Queen of Heaven. This particular piece likely served as a personal devotional item, meant to be displayed in a home or private chapel. This was in my father’s house.  He got it from my grandfather’s house.  He said it was Russian but I really have no idea, but it is European. My grandfather came to the US from Austria so it is likely from that area. The image appears to be handpainted. It is not centered very well in the frame but I like the way it looks. The glass in the frame is roughly cut and some of the construction of the frame could be handmade. It’s from the early to mid 1900’s.  Frame is bronze or copper. The back is painted red. I’m not sure if that has any significance. It measures 7-3/4 inches high by 5 inches wide.  The frame is meant to be displayed on a table.  Weight 13 ounces WFA106 Condition: Used.
