This is a ceramic bowl known as a chawan (tea bowl) used in a Japanesechado (tea ceremony). It dates to the mid Showa Era (c. 1950). It has hand painted, abstract floral images on the front and back. This chawan measures 5 1/2" wide at its widest by 3" tall (14 x 7.5 cm). There is a slight imperfection (as seen in picture 8) which was formed during the greenware stage, prior to glazing and final firing. This means that it does not impact the functionality of the chawan at all! Having been in storage for 70 years it remains in fine condition .
