A striking and substantial decorative charger featuring a fully fanned peacock surrounded by elaborate hand-engraved floral scrollwork. This large 19 inch brass wall plate was produced in India for the export décor market and represents the kind of bold mid-century decorative metalwork that was designed to command attention on a wall or displayed on a stand. The dramatic red enamel ground and deeply chased brass engraving create tremendous visual depth, and the size alone makes it far more impressive than the smaller examples commonly encountered. The peacock, a traditional symbol in Indian decorative arts, is rendered here with an extraordinary amount of hand tooling. The front retains a beautiful warm aged patina that highlights the engraving and has not been aggressively polished. Light age-appropriate wear and minor rubbing to some enamel areas consistent with vintage decorative brass pieces of this type. The reverse shows natural oxidation spotting and surface marks typical of age and handling. No structural damage, cracks, or repairs observed. NOTES The plate was only gently wiped with a damp cloth and a small amount of lemon oil to brighten the surface tone. It has intentionally not been polished so that the original patina and engraved depth remain intact. The size and dramatic peacock motif make this a particularly strong decorative example within this category of Indian brass chargers.
