This charming late 19th-century cabinet card features a beautifully posed young girl photographed byJ.M. Greene of Cleveland, Ohio, whose studio was located in theWilshire Building. The portrait captures the child reclining casually in an upholstered studio chair, dressed in an elaborate light-colored eyelet dress with lace trim and a dark ribbon at the collar. This charming late 19th-century cabinet card features a beautifully posed young girl photographed by J.M. Greene of Cleveland, Ohio , whose studio was located in the Wilshire Building . The portrait captures the child reclining casually in an upholstered studio chair, dressed in an elaborate light-colored eyelet dress with lace trim and a dark ribbon at the collar. She wears a delicate lace bonnet adorned with a dramatic dark bow or feathered decoration, giving the image a wonderfully Victorian sense of fashion and formality. What makes this portrait especially appealing is the child’s expression. Rather than smiling in the manner of modern childhood photography, she gazes directly at the camera with a serious, observant, almost skeptical look that feels remarkably modern to contemporary eyes. The mount of the photograph is particularly attractive, featuring a deep dark green or black surface with gilt lettering at the bottom. The condition of the card is good overall . The photograph retains pleasing tonal contrast and good clarity. There is expected age wear, including light corner wear, minor edge rubbing, and a couple of small scattered surface marks. The faint pencil identification on the back remains barely visible. Overall, this is a very displayable example with strong eye appeal and an especially engaging subject (see scans).
