Dating to approximately 1890–1910, this large full-length portrait depicts a young boy posed beside a bentwood chair, dressed in period clothing with an oversized collar, tunic-style outfit, dark stockings and high boots. He holds what appears to be a small riding crop or whip, adding another fantastic period detail to the image. The original portrait remains housed in its substantial oval wood frame with faux wood-grain painted decoration across the face. Unlike a modern reproduction, this piece has the depth, construction and wonderfully imperfect surface that comes from more than a century of age. Measures approximately 23” tall x 17” wide overall and just over 2” deep. The frame accommodates an approximately 20” x 14” portrait or artwork. The frame remains in attractive antique condition with scattered small chips, scratches and finish wear consistent with age. These imperfections contribute beautifully to its authentic aged character rather than detracting from the overall presentation. The back retains its original wood construction. Hanging wire has been replaced at some point and the portrait can be removed should the new owner eventually wish to change the artwork. The original boy’s portrait is included and, in my opinion, is a large part of the charm of this piece. Display it exactly as found for an instant piece of turn-of-the-century history — wonderfully suited to a Victorian interior, dark academia collection, gothic gallery, maximalist room or an eclectic collection of antique portraiture.
