Rank:Colonel / Полковник. Original vintage Soviet military photograph dating approximately to c. 1938–1940 , showing a Red Army Air Forces colonel posing outdoors in a forest. The officer wears the distinctive pre-war Soviet command uniform. His collar tabs display four rectangular rank insignia (“ шпалы ”) , corresponding to the rank of Colonel (Полковник) in the Red Army rank system of 1935–1940. The collar tabs also bear aviation branch insignia , identifying him with the Red Army Air Forces / Soviet military aviation . His uniform provides excellent visible detail, including pre-1940 collar rank insignia, aviation emblems, commander's sleeve chevrons, leather belt and shoulder strap . Two important Soviet decorations are worn prominently on his chest. They appear to include the Order of the Red Banner and the jubilee medal “XX Years of the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army.” The 20th Anniversary Red Army medal was introduced in 1938, helping date this portrait to approximately 1938–1940 , immediately before the major changes to Soviet military ranks and insignia.
