Vintage Italian Reuge Inlaid Wood Jewelry Music Box • Lara’s Theme Beautiful vintage Italian music box and jewelry box featuring exceptionally detailed multitone wood inlay in an ornate scrolling design. The combination of warm reddish brown, honey, cream, black and softly muted wood tones gives the pattern wonderful depth, with the natural grain of the different woods becoming part of the decoration. The lid opens to reveal a vivid red velvet-lined jewelry compartment with a raised section for rings or smaller pieces. Raised on four small black feet, the box is beautiful displayed closed or open on a dresser, vanity, bookshelf or collected tabletop. The  Swiss Reuge musical movement is working  and plays Maurice Jarre’s  “Lara’s Theme” from the 1965 film  Doctor Zhivago , a melody later adapted into the song  “Somewhere, My Love.”  The original tune label on the underside identifies the melody as  “Dr. Zhivago.”  A video of the music feature playing is included with the listing. Dating to approximately the  late 1960s–1970s , the box was made in Italy and fitted with a Swiss musical movement. The underside retains its original  Made in Italy  and  Dr. Zhivago  tune labels. No Reuge paper identification label remains on this example. Measurements 6.5" wide 5" deep Weight: 14.7 oz Condition Very good vintage condition overall. The exterior presents beautifully, with only subtle wear consistent with age and previous use. The intricate inlaid wood decoration remains vibrant and attractive, and the musical mechanism is working. The most noticeable sign of use is a small indentation on the wood inside the lid where it has made contact with the metal music stop pin over time. This is visible when the box is open and does not affect its function. The red velvet interior also shows very subtle circular impressions from jewelry previously stored inside, possibly bracelets or bangles. These are gentle traces of the box’s previous life rather than significant damage. Please see all photographs and video for the most complete representation of condition. About Reuge & the Music Reuge is a Swiss maker with a long history of mechanical musical movements and music boxes. This example combines a  Swiss Reuge musical movement with an Italian-made decorative wood case , a pairing found on other vintage Reuge music and jewelry boxes from this period. The melody is  “Lara’s Theme,” composed by Maurice Jarre for the 1965 film  Doctor Zhivago .  The melody later became widely known as  “Somewhere, My Love.” The contrasting Italian wood inlay is an especially beautiful feature of this example, creating an elaborate pattern through the different colors and grains of the wood itself.
