Vintage Art Deco French Galalith "Bakelite" Hand Carved Bead Necklace Butterscotch 18" This is a beautiful French Art Deco statement necklace dating from the 1930s.  The piece is crafted from genuine Galalith, a  milk casein based European plastic heavily favored by iconic French designers of the era (often collected and referred to in the market as "French Bakelite").   It is not American phenolic Bakelite resin. The beaded design has   three chunky spherical centerpie ces with hand carved geometric leaf or floral carvings.   The beads were crafted using a traditional French dip dye method. The deep surface carvings cut through the saturated butterscotch orange exterior to reveal the lighter, creamy colored matrix underneath.  The necklace is balanced with machine turned ribbed barrel beads and sharply geometric "macaroni" style saucer spacer beads. the beaded necklace has a ribbed brass metal barrel screw clasp closure. Size:  Necklace length is approx. 18". Condition & Restoration:  Pre-owned, very good vintage condition.  The  Galalith beads are beautifully preserved with vibrant color, clean carvings, and no chips or cracks.  It does look to me like the necklace was professionally restrung at some point.
