The basket has a densely hand-woven natural rattan or similar plant-fiber body, substantial wooden upper rim and a distinctive thick arched wooden carrying handle. The handle and rim are joined with traditional rattan/cane lashings rather than modern hardware. Beautiful early hand-woven basket, believed to be Chinese and dating to the late Qing Dynasty / early Republic period, circa 1900–1925.   The basket has a densely hand-woven natural rattan or similar plant-fiber body, substantial wooden upper rim and a distinctive thick arched wooden carrying handle. The handle and rim are joined with traditional rattan/cane lashings rather than modern hardware. Especially appealing is the basket's warm honey-brown surface and naturally developed patina. The bottom is fully woven, and the construction throughout shows considerable hand workmanship. This appears to have been a functional market, harvest or carrying basket. Similar antique Chinese baskets are sometimes described as rice or grain baskets, although its exact original use is unknown. It is a lovely piece of early Asian folk craft with excellent texture and patina, suitable for a collection of antique basketry, Chinese folk art, primitive objects or rustic interiors.  Acquired from the estate of a Texas antique dealer.  Offered as found; aside from very light dusting, we've made no attempt to clean or restore this piece, preferring to leave any conservation to a qualified specialist at the purchaser’s discretion.    Approximately 11.5" × 9.75" × 10" 15.2 oz. Condition: Wear consistent with age and use. There are scratches, discoloration, dust, surface wear, and irregularities to the wood and basketry. Some of the original rattan/cane lashings around the rim and handle attachments are worn, split, broken or partially missing. There are small losses and loose/broken fibers consistent with considerable age and use. Please view all photos closely as they are an important part of the condition description.
