These impressive vases feature classic hand-painted underglaze cobalt decoration with birds in flight, flowering foliage, and landscape motifs, executed in the soft, painterly style associated with late 19th-century Japanese export porcelain. Each vase has a flared trumpet mouth, baluster form, and an unglazed foot with kiln grit and a drainage hole, a characteristic feature of Japanese export vases intended for Western interiors during the Meiji era.
