Has not been cleaned and still has residue near cork. This is a classic American salt-glazed stoneware advertising/mercantile jug or a “whiskey jug”, “merchant jug” made for John H. Walsh & Co., a wholesale liquor dealer/importer in Boston, Massachusetts. John H. Walsh, an Irish immigrant, founded or expanded the business around 1878 at locations including Haymarket Square; it continued under family (e.g., son James) into the early 1910s (pre-Prohibition). The specific stamping “1830 Washington St. Boston Mass.” matches known variants from their operations. These jugs are tangible pieces of Boston’s immigrant merchant history and the pre-Prohibition liquor trade. Measures 12” h Condition: ping on side with glaze inside evident of time of manufacture, some discoloration near bottom. Faded Colbalt blue glaze wash throughout. Partial cork. No chips or cracks. Area on handle appears on other jugs of same manufacturer. I don’t believe it to be a defect.
