This beautiful, signed crystal vase by Orrefors is engraved with a boy playing the flute. This beautiful, signed crystal vase by Orrefors is engraved with a boy playing the flute. It was designed for Orrefors by Sven Palmqvist in 1939 and engraved by Sten Petersson. It is round with 3/8” thick glass giving it a nice weight. The vase has some scratches around the belly and the bottom due to use but as a testament to the high quality of the glass, they do not stand out or detract from its beauty. Orrefors Glass - History Utilizing the site of a 1726 ironworks in Orrefors in Smäland, Sweden, Orrefors glassworks began producing glass in 1898.   Prior to 1913, the company’s principal products included bottles, medical and scientific glass, and window glass. In the 1990s, Orrefors and Kosta Boda merged and became Orrefors Kosta Boda AB.   In 1997, the company became part of The Royal Scandinavian Group. In 2005, New Wave Group purchased Orrefors Kosta Boda.   The Orrefors glassworks was closed in December 2012. Sven Palmqvist (1906–1984) was one of Sweden's leading glass artists during the 20th century. After his studies at the University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, he worked for the Orrefors glassworks between the 1940s and 1970s. Sven became well-known for his innovative glass techniques such as Kraka, Ravenna, and Fuga. His artistry is represented at the Swedish National Museum of Art and Design.
