Ngil masks were primarily created during the19th and early 20th centuries. The French colonial authorities banned the Ngil secret society and its judicial rituals around1910, which effectively put an end to the creation and use of these specific masks for their original spiritual and tribal purposes. This is a  Fang mask  from Gabon traditionally used by the  Ngil society  for judicial purpose. It features a distinctive elongated face painted with kaolin white clay to represent ancestral spirits. The mask's intimidating design was intended to resolve conflicts and identify sorcery within the community. Ngil masks were primarily created during the  19th and early 20th centuries .
