It is an ANTIQUE Japanese-made bowl from the Satsuma province. It is in beautiful condition with only a small bit of natural light wear to the gold gilt rim, and darkening areas from age (see closeup photos.). This is a very RARE delicate collectible small landscape bowl (often referred to as a miniature bowl or a pin/saucer dish) measuring 3” diameter x 1.5” tall. It is an ANTIQUE Japanese-made bowl from the Satsuma province. It is in beautiful condition with only a small bit of natural light wear to the gold gilt rim, and darkening areas from age (see closeup photos.) There are no chips or cracks noted. I will be happy to respond! 😊 This is what I found about this piece online: This is a vintage Japanese Satsuma earthenware small bowl, recognizable by its characteristic yellow-toned ivory-colored crackle glaze, hand-painted polychrome enamels, and gilt-trimmed rim. The bowl has a hand-painted interior depicting Mount Fuji in the background, a colorful perched bird (such as a kingfisher) on a wooden post or bamboo-like feature, and floral/reed accents. This bowl dates from the late Meiji to Taisho period (late 19th to early 20th century). It features crackled glaze, raised enamel and hand-applied gold gilt accents on a scalloped or lobed rim. The maker's mark on the bottom confirms that this piece is genuine Japanese Satsuma ware from the 旭山 (Kyokuzan) workshop. The circle enclosing a cross is the Shimazu clan mon (crest). This mark historically denotes pieces produced or decorated in the Satsuma province (modern-day Kagoshima prefecture) under the authority or style of the ruling Shimazu family. Written inside the red rectangular lozenge with a gold border are the characters the two hand-painted kanji characters read 旭山 (Kyokuzan), which translates literally to “Morning Sun Mountain.” This specific style of red and gold enamel signature cartouche is characteristic of workshops operating during the late Meiji to early Taisho period (circa 1900–1920s). Pieces from this era were highly sought after as luxury decorative trade goods exported to Western markets. Kyokuzan was a recognized workshop known for producing fine quality Satsuma earthenware featuring delicate, detailed natural landscapes, birds, and flowers, high quality overglaze enamel, and fine gilding. Smaller utilitarian shapes like bowls or tea items from this workshop are highly collectible among antique pottery enthusiasts. The artwork on this bowl is crisp, featuring popular motifs like Mount Fuji and fine multi-colored enameling, which increases its desirability among niche collectors.
