Antique Cabinet Card Little Boy Huge Ruffled Blouse Boots Victorian Photo Description Charming original antique cabinet card photograph of a young boy, dating to the late 19th or very early 20th century. The little boy poses outdoors beside an attractive wooden chair with a carved floral back. He is wonderfully dressed in an elaborate light-colored ruffled blouse with oversized shoulder ruffles, full sleeves and a large bow or tie at the neck, paired with dark knee-length trousers, long stockings, and high lace-up boots. His clothing is a terrific example of the elaborate fashions worn by young boys around the turn of the century. The oversized decorative blouse in particular gives this portrait loads of character. Another interesting feature is that this appears to have been photographed outside rather than in a conventional studio. The clapboard siding of a house or other wooden building is clearly visible behind him, with bare ground underfoot. The carved chair was likely brought outside specifically for the portrait. The reverse is plain aside from a very small dark mark/stamp near the bottom. The date should be approximately 1895–1905, with circa 1900 being my best estimate. The boy's elaborate blouse, knee pants, stockings and high boots are particularly characteristic of children's fashions around the turn of the 20th century. Although these highly decorative blouses can look feminine to modern eyes, boys of this age were commonly dressed in ornate blouses with ruffles, bows, lace and other embellishments during this period. His short hair, trousers, stockings and boots make the overall presentation distinctly boyish for the era.  Condition Good antique condition with age-appropriate wear. The photograph retains nice detail and contrast. There is some light surface wear, scattered spotting/soiling and minor wear along the mount edges and corners. The dark gray mount shows typical age-related wear. Reverse has general surface wear and a small dark mark/stamp near the lower portion.
