A two-tone Art Nouveau bird brooch: a matte pewter-tone hummingbird caught mid-hover in front of an antiqued brass wreath of trumpet flowers and rolling scrollwork. The two-tone treatment is what makes it work — the bird is left pale and matte so it lifts clean off the darker, warmer wreath behind it, and the wing is raised well proud of the frame rather than cast flat against it. The stippled texture on the wreath and the feather detail on the bird are both crisply struck. The reverse carries the impressed copyright JJ mark of Jonette Jewelry, the Rhode Island maker whose pewter figurals from the 1980s and 1990s are steadily collected. This is one of their better nature designs.
