I. Mix & Co No 1 EX Framing 1 1/2” Wood Socket Chisel Tool  Super clean vintage chisel, over 114 years old     I believe this is an early framing wood chisel made by G. I. Mix & Company of Yalesville, Ct ., near Wallingford, CT.   A little history from resources : This company has few resources, but I believe was first in operation around 1810 by founder John Mix at which time the company was a manufacturer of bayonets until about 1830 for the Federal Government. In 1854 the company was taken over by the son Garry I. Mix, started manufacturing metal ware and flatware. Around the 1880’s, the company started producing household goods (spoons and cutlery) and carpenter tools.  The company was known as a fine edge tool maker. Garry I. Mix died is 1892, the company continued, but failed in 1903, and was bought out and operations restarted until 1912 when the plant burned down.   The chisel is stamped on the upper blade with the logo of G. I. Mix & Co. No 1 EX .   The No. 1 EX refers to the top quality or extra quality of the steel used to make the chisel.  The chisel is 13 1/4” in overall length and 8 1/8” from the blade tip to the end of the socket. The handle is 5” in dim.  The blade is a straight edge and is 1 1/2” wide. The chisel has been cleaned and is in good condition,…HAS LETTERS JJ STAMPED ON BACKSIDE,.… a new old stock hardwood handle was fitted and installed,…… (the No 1 EX stamp   –hard to make out),….needs a fine honing,….. As with the vintage of the chisel, there is some normal use wear, a few minor dings, some minor discoloration, all as noted from the photos.   The chisel is SOLD AS IS with NO RESERVE . e-mail questions before bidding.
