And taking pictures was an experience on its own. Beautiful!! K on with information.. Vintage XL Red Abalone Shell with a Blister Pearl. A large gastropod mollusk from the family Haliotidae. This one lived in shallow water with its shape being a low profile. This hydrodynamic shape acts like spoiler on a race car. This protected him from being swiped away by the forceful waves. This shell has a vivid blend of emerald green, pink,metallic blues, turquoise. These colors are made when light passes through layers of microscopic platelets called aragonite. The dark muscle scar in the center is where the strong muscle foot was attached to its shell. The rugged exterior beautifully displays the shells history as natural mico-ecosystem, complete with decades old marine encrusations. The Blister Pearl was produced by the Abalone to protect it from the outside ocean. Common use for these Abalone shells are foyer key dish,decor, jewelry, crafting.
