Antique First Communion Photo Boy Prayer Book Rosary By Gentzel Chicago 1900s Description Original antique early 1900s studio photograph of a young boy, apparently commemorating his First Communion or Confirmation, photographed by Anton H. Gentzel of Chicago, Illinois. The boy is seated in a handsome carved wooden chair and dressed formally in a dark suit with knee-length trousers, long stockings, two-tone lace-up shoes, pocket square, and an elaborate floral boutonniere with ribbon. One of the most interesting details is the small prayer book or Bible held in his hands. A strand of beads, very likely a rosary, can be seen hanging from the book, adding another wonderful religious detail to the portrait. Beside him stands an exceptionally tall ceremonial candle decorated with flowers and ribbon and supported by an ornate clear glass candleholder. The candle, prayer book, rosary, boutonniere, and formal clothing strongly suggest that this portrait was made to commemorate a First Communion or possibly Confirmation. The elaborate studio setting is also noteworthy, featuring a grand architectural backdrop with staircase and fireplace or mantel, an ornate carved chair, and decorative pedestal. The photograph is mounted on its original cream-colored embossed photographer's card. The studio imprint at the bottom reads: Gentzel 659 Lincoln Ave. Chicago The photographer was Anton H.
