It opened in 1854 and closed in 1965. Opened under a different name, in 1870 when moved to a larger location it took the name "The White House". By the late 1880s, the store already featured a 150-seamstress dressmaking staff, and it maintained a reputation for quality throughout its history until it closed in 1965. The White House was known for selling luxurious apparel, and specific, vintage "White House Beaumont" brand mink stoles from the 1940s and 1950s exist. In the 19th century, the company was known for its progressive treatment of its employees, closing at 6pm and on holidays, offering annual paid vacations, paid sick time, and commissions on sales. The store burned down in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and was rebuilt at a third location.
