The underside bears a Japanese inscription reading 実用新案 ("Utility Model"), engraved in the traditional right-to-left style used on older Japanese objects. The inscription was reviewed by a Japanese language specialist, who identified it as a Japanese Utility Model registration mark, supporting manufacture after 1905 and consistent with the late Meiji through early Shōwa period.
