Antique Late 1800's Victorian Wilcox Silverplate Complete 5pc Cruet Castor #542 This is in amazing condition, especially considering it is around 148 years old! Spins easily and all bottles are original to this set. Bottles have a faint lavender color and are etched with florals and dots with original silver plate lids and matching glass stoppers, which is rare. Oil, vinegar, salt & pepper and a smaller bottle with hinged lid for mustard or relish. Holder is etched around the outer edge with baskets of florals and has a very ornate, Victorian style handle.  This antique Wilcox Silver Plate Co. cruet set is an elegant example of Victorian-era "castor" or condiment sets, typically dating from the late 19th century, around 1878 to 1890. The Wilcox Silver Plate Co. was established in 1867 and became one of America's premier silverplate manufacturers.  Makers Mark: The central stamp features crossed hammers inside a circle, flanked by the text "Wilcox Silver Plate Co." This specific stamp design dates back to the late 19th century, before the company merged into the International Silver Company in 1898. QUADRUPLE PLATE: This indicates the highest quality standard used in the production of Victorian-era silverplate holloware. Rather than being dipped four times, it means the factory used four times the industry-standard amount of pure silver to coat the base metal, resulting in a much thicker and more durable layer. All bottles have a very light lavender color. 💜💜💜 In the mid 1800's manganese dioxide, popularly called "glassmaker's soap," began to be used by American glass manufacturers as a decolorizer. By including a small amount of this ingredient in the melt, they could produce glass that appeared virtually colorless.
