George returned to Japan before WWII to attend Keio University in Tokyo. After studying abroad, George applied & was accepted to Stanford University. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor George was imprisoned in a Japanese internment camp for the duration of the war. Following his release, in 1948, George founded Mikasa. Before opening the Mikasa factory, George considered importing tuna into the United States. A friend suggested importing a nonperishable item.
