The moriage high relief work of Japanese dragon chasing a small sparrow. Dragon goes 3/4. Bought this from an estate with Asian collection of bronze work and Tibetan furniture. Japanese Meiji era bronze with dark redish patina bowl, vase, censer or jardiniere. Wonderful craftsmanship of this era in bronze work.  The moriage high relief work of Japanese dragon chasing a small sparrow. Dragon goes 3/4  around the widest part of form.  The bottom has had a hole cut out (I don't think that was there originally).   Bought this from an estate with Asian collection of bronze work and Tibetan furniture.   The Meiji period in history for Japan represented an enormous change in the country's daily life and its world relationships. With the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate and thus the Edo Period in 1876 the new emperor's reign and the country's change over from a feudal closed system to a more westernized government. This created a class of people looking for new ways to express themselves, the need for artists to create export wears and for the reinterpretation of crafts.
