Skoda Holding a. s. is a Czech engineering company with a long tradition, based mainly in Pilsen.  It mainly produces equipment for transport (locomotives, trams), energy (turbines) and other machines. In 1859, Count Valdstejn founded a branch of his foundry and machine shop in Pilsen.  Equipment for breweries, sugar refineries, mines, steam engines, boilers, steel bridge structures, and equipment for railways were manufactured here. After the establishment of Czechoslovakia in 1918, the company expanded its scope to include the production of locomotives, cars, aircraft, ships, etc.  At that time, more than 35,000 employees worked at Skoda. In 1925, the company Laurin & Klement was incorporated. During World War II, the company was part of Nazi military production and more than 70% of the factory was destroyed in an Allied bomber raid in April 1945.  After the war, the concern was nationalized and some parts were separated from it (e.g. the car factory in Mlada Boleslav, the aircraft factory in Prague).  The company focused mainly on heavy and transport engineering, mainly for the markets of the Eastern Bloc countries.  More than 2,400 electric locomotives were exported to the Soviet Union alone between 1957 and 1989. In 1951–1953, the company was called "Zavody V. I. Lenina" or "Enterprises of Vladimir Lenin". After 1989, privatization took place without any connection with a foreign partner. Skoda's situation in the 1990s was so serious that it was even threatened with bankruptcy. In 1999, an agreement was reached with the creditor banks and the company was stabilized.
