This is a tintype, also known as a melainotype or ferrotype; a photograph printed on a thin piece of metal that had been coated with lacquer or enamel. They were most popular during the 1860s and 1870s. Condition This GEM tintype is in good condition and image is pretty clear for its age and size. Corners have been clipped. Some blotching on edges, scratches and blemishes. Some slight bending are noticed about 1/2 way down. Could have been removed from an album. Photos tell the story and show size compared to a penny.
